Upright, 1920s chappell, iron frame. Several chips in woodwork

by Heather Shepherd

The proper tool... a heavy duty piano trolley

The proper tool... a heavy duty piano trolley

I've had a quote from a general removal company (BAR registered), who have said that they don't have a specific piano trolley, but they have 4 big wheels, which they would slip under the corners of the piano to move it.
The piano has got quite a few chips in it from accidents with a wheelchair in the past, so I'm not particularily worried about an odd scratch. However, it's a family heirloom, and I want to make sure it's moved properly. I can't afford a specialist to move it, and other removal companies which a trolley are also a lot more expensive.
What should I make sure that the removal men do (e.g. blankets covering it, etc.)?

Comment
1) This sounds very odd to me..although these wheels the movers propose to use may work...I dont know why they dont have the right equipment. Bad workmen may blame their tools, but good workmen come equipped with the right ones!

It sounds to me that you don't think you have the right people on the job.

2) No...don't cover it... If you do so you make a collision more likely since a clear view is obscured. They should cover it on the van, or as their manoeuvring requires.

You don't say where you are moving it to, when or with what urgency. Nor do you say how much you have been quoted.

If you are not yet committed you could try my piano moving enquiries site for a quote from a specialist who handles domestic piano moves... Thats me, and I will be in Oxford in the middle of July (2010).

The trolley shown in the picture is one that we use.

Stephen
