Removing the Lyre from a Wurlitzer baby grand piano

by Rene Longoria
(Apple Valley, Ca USA)

I can see how to remove the legs for crating but I am not sure how to remove the Lyre, does it unbolt from underneath and what does it unhook from on the inside?

Hello Rene,

Removing the lyre is not a difficult procedure

The Lyre will unbolt from underneath, however each manufacturer has different ways of attaching the connecting rods for the sustain and mute pedals.

Sometimes the rods are wrought iron with hooked ends, which you can unhook after dropping the lyre, but more usually the rods are simply held in place when the lyre is bolted up tight to the piano.

The thing to look for (in all grand pianos) is whether there are any additional springs and associated spring cups, or wooden dowels which may fall out unnoticed. (example: Yamaha use these to ensure a more positive pedal response) If there are, these will be external, and easy to see... you just need to have looked!

So.. you need to get on your back and slide underneath - with a torch if necessary. I am sure the job will reveal itself. If there are fiddly bits and some one else will be reassembling the piano, a photo can never hurt.
