Tips for moving pianos over steps

When moving pianos over steps special moving trolley, with good sized wheels, many obstacles can be overcome by simply lifting one end over, onto or off a step. It may assist to place the trolley off centre, so that when lifting one end up a step the other does not scrape the ground. With all these manoeuvres, keep yourself welded tight to the piano, and think about balance.

The use of strong boards and blocks and chocks can assist with short flights of steps, uneven surfaces, and also those high modern double glazed entrances, built up with plastic not designed to suffer weight. Be particularly wary of overhanging door steps, which may be damaged by having great weight applied to the edge. Similarly garden paths with overhanging stone steps need careful planning to avoid placing weight on their edges.

For larger outside steps, the piano may need to be demounted from the trolley, with protective blankets and boards laid on the steps. It is recommended to remove the castors, which may get damaged, damage the steps or just hinder the operation. However you need to be aware of possible damage to the pedals. Blankets and even cushions can prevent scratching if placed at the bottom of the steps.
