Moving a Steinway Baby Grand from Room to Room

How do I remove the foot pedal (lyre) so I can move the piano from one room to the next, then back to its original location once the carpet is replaced?

The Lyre is easy to remove:

1) On your back under the piano you will see it is attached with a couple of bolts: undo them a couple of turns till the rear facing support rods (running at 45 degrees) can be withdrawn.

2) Fully undo the bolts and the lyre will drop down.

4) Have a good look at the top of the vertical connecting rods... If they contact at the top to wooden horizontal connecting rods, these may have springs, spring cups, loose wooden pins, or felt pieces which can become dislodged... no big deal to put them back as long as you took the time to familiarise yourself beforehand!

3) If necessary, have an assistant pick up one front corner enough to tip over the lyre and withdraw it from under the piano.

4) While you are there check the wedges which hold the legs firm are chocked good and tight.

Grand pianos do not like being moved on their legs, and I discussed a work around here... then the below line will make sense.

NB: Since your Steinway is on a carpet, rather than use a blanket, you will need something more slippery: Clean heavy guage plastic sheet or similar.
