John Broadwood . Upright

by Peter Warnes
(London)

Hello.

I want to move our piano from our living room through to a back room.

The only way through is along a corridor with a right angle turn. the problem is it wont fit! Can I turn it over? or will I damage it?

Yes you can!

Hi Peter,

yes, you can turn the piano over.

I would use heavy plastic sheet to drag the piano around the corner.. but if the floor is wooden a blanket will do.

a couple of things:

1) Remove 3 pieces: The desk (the panel where the music goes), the key cover, and the bottom panel.
This is to ensure they don't fall off during the manoeuvre.

2) be sure to have 2 strong peopleat each end.

The lift gets easier and easier after initially picking it up... But harder and harder as you lower it to the ground again... so the person lifting must act as a counterweight to prevent the piano coming down witha a bang.

3) The Broadwoods have an overhanging lid and there are 2 points here.

First: The person 'receiving the upturned piano can grip the it beneathe the lid and lower it to the floor without crushing their fingers.

Second: The Lid could be damaged unless protected. You need to put some heavy flattenned cardboardon the sheet or blanket where the lid makes contact, and this will take the strain. be sure not to bang the lid on carpet grips or raised doorways.
