Best way to move a 'Parlor Grand Upright Piano ' ?

by Charlie Dreyer
(Columbus, NJ)

Have u any pictures to go with the instructions above?

An acquaintance is giving us a Parlor Grand Upright Piano she needs removed ASAP.
'It is older and will need service' is all we know at this point.
We have a Dakota long bed that we have moved a 1875 Steinway upright on.
We're not in the business tho (Yet!!) ha ha.

The price is right.

We're in Columbus, NJ -The piano to be moved is in Pennsville, NJ.

What should it cost to have it moved for us?
We don't know yet what 'will need service' means; so we may want to
take it somewhere else before we bring it home. But she
needs it gone 'yesterday'!

Thanks in advance for your assistance,
Charlie - rooster157@comcast.net

piano moving tips and pictures

Kelly Moving have a good page on this.

I am fascinated by the endevour shown by you guys planning to move these pianos.. presumably without all the tools... How for example will you load it onto the flatbed.. oh well - you've done it before.

Over here in the UK we don't use the same kind of skid shown, and I don't know if the shoe we use is commonly used in The USA. This is important because the skid used by Kelly has no sides, so the Lid can be strapped shut left in place, and overhang the side, whereas the piano shoe used in Europe has a back and the lid cannot overhang... if it is not removed the weight of the piano will be on the lid and tear the hinges.

Personally, I would advise that the fittings on old pianos should not be trusted, and the lid, key cover and desk all be removed and separately wrapped.

You need to know that the keyboard end of the piano is heaviest and plan to do the lifting from the other end.

You have moved an upright before but not a small grand... they are less stable than uprights.

The Kelly guys are using a a pro piano trolley with pneumatic tyres set to the outside of the trolley's frame.
This trolley gives improved stability... and if you dont have one you may need to build a flat road with boards because small bumps on a path become horribly exagerated.

I would be failing in my duty not to point out that buying tools and fuel, damaging peoples houses, and damaging yourselves (not to mention the piano) are all costs - or potential costs to be considered.

A capable moving company will probably organise a part load...although I dont know the 'going rate' in NJ...but it may cost less than you think.
