Baby Grand Movers Ruined My Carpet!

by Sarah
(Swansea)

We had a piano company come in and move our piano from the living room to the dining room. we had had a new carpet laid so I put cut offs all over the carpet so that it would not be damaged. I asked them to remove these from under the piano when it was in place. When they called me to check it all when they had finished, they had done all this and put the cut offs to one side. when they left I took the cut offs and other items out of the room. Under the cut offs was a huge black mark. I hired a carpet cleaner who spent all evening on it, but the mark will not come out and has ruined the carpet and the look of our new room. The piano company say their insurance company won't cover it so they are refusing to do anything about it. Can I insist they pay for a new carpet (cost us £95) or at least remove the piano and put it back again free of charge so that we can have the carpet laid again?

Answer: This sounds very frustrating for you, but unfortunately this site is not qualified to offer consumer or legal advice.

My advice therefore would be more practical than legal: Before you exhaust yourself pitting yourself against the piano movers: Do not assume the carpet cleaners were perfect either - they might have been trying the wrong techniques for the mark.

The black mark is probably rubber or grease or a combination.

I quickly Googled 'solvents for cleaning rubber marks on carpet', and found these Tips.

Please note, I do not accept liability for these suggestions!

Any further contributions and tips are welcome.
