Moving Advice When estimating, it does not matter that you are guessing, or that you dont even know what size boxes you will have. What is important however, is that if you post to move 20 boxes, everyone can understand the volume involved.

So;- let's agree a standard size for a box: A 12 bottle cardboard wine case will do fine.All right,they do vary a bit in size of course, but we only need approximations, and everyone can picture one.
Now translate your property into an equivalent volume.

A rough guide to the capacity of 1 typical 12 bottle wine case.
This student 120 cds,
4 feet of small paperbacks (as you view them on a shelf),
2 feet of 'manual' size books
1 foot of 'coffee table' size. 3 box files, 6 ring binder files, Clothes probably use a box per drawer. No doubt Some of you will end up using binbags for clothes. If you must, put one bag inside another and tie them up. They are equivalent to one box even if they are slightly bigger because they can fill up holes when packing a van.

Items which will not be boxed can also be converted into a wine box equivalent.
For example a you might estimate a wide screen tv to be the equivalent volume of 3 wine cases.
A small computer desk may be equivalent to 6 wine cases.
Your vulnerable computer and music equipment must be boxed and need special attention: If you don't have the original packaging, allow plenty of space for padding.

Estimating extraordinary items: Specify their dimensions. For Example,a professional draughtsman's board may well need a box van because of it's height.

Removals companies will not carry dangerous, noxious or inflammable substances. Paint is probably the most common problem substance:- if a tin of paint leaks, it can cause serious damage.
Therefore you should consult your removal company, or if hiring a vehicle, Good manners and respect for your moving partner demand that you declare your intention to take anything which could be a problem,and to pack those items safley.
